The story began on Christmas Day 2017, when Wendy and Li-Yen—two young women with nothing more than a shared love of desserts and an insatiable curiosity for flavour—finally committed to turning their dream into a real business. Wendy, a Food Science graduate working in quality assurance, and Li-Yen, a patisserie student and café worker, joined forces and started small—baking tirelessly and selling ice cream sandwiches at local Auckland markets. Every weekend was a whirlwind of flour, late nights, and early mornings. They baked at home, packed with care, and sold with heart. Those humble beginnings were anything but easy, yet the pair poured themselves into every detail, honing recipes with relentless passion. In between market shifts and part-time jobs, they carved out precious time for research, experimentation, and long chats over drinks (Dr Rudi’s, where their name was born, still holds a special place in their hearts). After six months of side hustling and soul-searching, they made the bold leap to open a store—and Wen & Yen the bakery was born. Today, their storefront is a buzzing local favourite: not just a place to pick up something sweet, but a full-sensory experience built on values of craftsmanship, approachability, and pure delight. Every item is still handmade in small batches by the founders themselves, keeping the love, joy, and creativity intact.
